Design the manufacture of cellulose acetatecapacity:65500 metric tons/yearcellulose is treated with acetic anhydride in acetic acid solvent and sulphuric acid (7-10% based on cellulose) as a catalyst. During exothermic reaction the temperature is controlled at 40-45 degree celcius to minimize cellulose degradation. After the reaction solution become clear and fibre-free and the desired viscosity has been achieved sufficient aqueous acetic acid (60-70% acid) is added to destroy the excess anhydride and provide 10-15% free water for hydrolysis. The cellulose acetate is hydrolyzed in solutions at 40-45 degree celcius for varying lengths of time (4-20hour ) until the desired average number acetyl groups in the anhydroglucose unit of celluse is obtained at this pint the ester is precipitated with dilute aq acetic acid .The precipitate is hardened in 25-30% aq acetic acid which is drained off and recovered. The ester is washed thoroughly in iron-free water to remove acid any desirable salts these wash liquids are sent for recovery. After washing the product stream is centrifuged and sent to dryer.
