For this assignmеnt, сhoose one of the quraniс verses on the next page, and then do three things:
(1) Look up the verse уou have chosen in the following English translations of the Qur’an: Pickthall,
Abdullah Yusuf Ali, Muhammad Asad, Muhsin Khan, and Sahih International.
For Abdullah Yusuf Ali and Muhammad Asad’s translations, go to:
https://www.altafsir.com/ViewTranslations.asp?Displaу=yes&SoraNo=1&Ayah=0&Language=2
&LanguageID=2&TranslationBook=3
At the top of the screen, select the sura and verse you want. Be sure to read the footnotes under
the translation as well (you may need to scroll down in order to see them).
The Pickthall, Muhsin Khan, and Sahih International translations are available online at
https://legacy.quran.com/ Once you click on the sura, then a box appears on the left side of the
screen which allows you to select the translations that you want to display. DO NOT use this site
in MacOdrum Library in hard copy on the fifth floor.)
(2) Compare and list the differences among these translations of the verse. Such differences may
include: word choice, inserting words in brackets, or footnotes (or a combination of these
strategies). Keep in mind that any words in brackets are not a translation of any Arabic word in
the verse/passage—some translators add them because in their view, this clarifies the meaning.
The best way to present this list is in a table or something similar.
(3) Identify and explain the reasons for these differences. What issues are the translators trying to
address? How have past or present debates among Muslims influenced the translations of the
verse that you have chosen? What role do cultural differences and the concerns of contemporary
English-speaking audiences appear to have played? (Note that the point is NOT to decide which
translation is “better” or “worse”, just the factors shaping translators’ choices.) For background
on these factors, consult relevant course readings as well as related entries in the Encyclopaedia
of the Qur’an (BP 133 .E53 2001 in MacOdrum Library on the fifth floor).
