From the basic definitions of ##sin## and ##cos## and ##cos^2(x)+sin^2(x) = 1## or ##cos^2(x) = 1 -sin^2(x)## So ##cos^2(x) – sin^2(x)## ##= (1-sin^2(x))-sin^2(x)## ##= 1-2sin^2(x)##
