Joseph E. Johnston was a General in the Confederate army but did not get along with the confederate President Jefferson Davis or Robert E. Lee another confederate general. Lee and Johnston both attended and graduated West Point around the same time but Davis put all of his confidence in the abilities of Lee and made him the only Major General of the state. This created tension and hostility between the two men as well as the fact that Lee took over Johnston command when Johnston was injured. Johnston had very little luck in the battles that he fought while Lee was praised for being the hero of the confederacy.
