Laboratory Assignment
Students will prepare a report on an organic molecule. (Such as a small molecule or drug from the pharmaceutical industry). The report must be typewritten and include the following information.
Chemical structure of the molecule and chemical name of the compound.
Brief history and current medicinal/biological use of the molecule.
A synthetic route to prepare the molecule. The synthetic route presented may come from the literature (especially for larger or more complex molecules) or may be one that the student proposes using reactions that we have covered in the course. Chemoffice software with the lab text may be used for drawings or a neatly drawn handwritten route if software is not available.
The student must show all the mechanisms of any reactions in the synthetic route that have been covered in the course. Arrows should be utilized to show all electron movement and intermediates must be shown. This portion of the report may be hand-written and should be separate from the synthetic route.
The report should also evaluate the synthesis presented such as discussing why certain molecular disconnections were chosen and proposing the pros and cons of alternate synthetic routes.
The report must include references for all information obtained from the literature following appropriate ACS (American Chemical Society) guidelines.
