These readings, assigned for Week 2, will introduce you to the field of Asian American literary studies. One is the preface to the first ever anthology of Asian American literature, Aiiieeee! (1974), which more or less establishes the field and interjects it into American Literature. The second, “Reviewing Asian American Literary Studies,” is more scholarly and surveys changes in the field since Aiiieeee! American literature and literary studies. Published in the 1990s, it takes us half-way to today and a good distance into the flourishing proliferation of writing by Asian Americans as well as expansions of the concept of Asian American.
