Assuming smooth delivery of the power and torque in normal operation of the motor/engine determine the following that could be used to transmit torque from the engine to the load. a) The minimum allowable solid shaft diameter if a factor of safety of 3 is applied against torsional failure given that the allowable shear stress in the shaft material is 135MN/m2. b) The minimum allowable tubular shaft diameter D if a factor of safety of 3 is applied against torsional failure assuming the ratio of the internal diameter d to the external diameter is given by c) If the motor/engine is to turn a shaft of length 400mm compare the masses of the two shafts in parts (a) and (b).
