The basic unit of meter is known as a foot which is made up of one or more words that form a specific rhythmic pattern. For example a two-syllable word or phrase with an accent or stress on the second syllable is known as an iamb while a two-syllable word or phrase with an accent on the first syllable is known as a trochee. On page 842 is a chart listing examples of the most common types of feet. Meter is also measured in longer units known as lines and stanzas. A line of poetry is a metrical unit that consists of at least one foot. On page 843 is a short list of the most common types of lines. A stanza is a group of lines made up of repeated rhythmic and/or rhyming patterns.
