The graph shows plots of surface tension of
solutions of straight chain aliphatic alcohols as a function of their
concentration. A is C6H13OH B is C7H15OH
C is C8H17OH D is C9H19OH and E is
C10H21OH. For A and E use these data to calculate the amount of alcohol
accumulating at the water surface as a function of the concentration and hence
estimate the amount at the surface when saturation is reached. Assuming that
this corresponds to a monolayer calculate the cross-sectional areas of the
n-hexyl and n-decyl hydrocarbon chains. Are the values consistent with what you
would expect for vertical orientation of the hydrocarbon chains at the
interface?
