Thirty years ago on August 9 1974 the Washington Post ranwhat was then the largest front-page headline in its history:Nixon Resigns. That date marked both the end of Richard Nixonspresidency and the beginning of three decades of debate about whatrole journalism played in uncovering the Watergate scandal thatforced Nixon from office and how Watergate in turn influencedjournalism itself. Did media muckraking actually bring down apresident of the United States? How have politics and investigativereporting changed as a result? These questions are what formed thebasis of what is discussed in this paper.
