You will select one website from the lists I have provided. You will write a well-argued critical review for each. Each paper should be between 8 and 12 pages. Your paper should assess the success or failure of each public history product based on the following questions: Who is the intended audience? Who is the author of the information? Are audience members invited to participate in the interpretation? Your reviews should also incorporate relevant research about the subject of the exhibit/website and the institution hosting or creating it. You should also search for other reviews and if possible try to contact the curator and/or designer.
The educational goals for this assignment are as follows:
To engage in public history as scholarly inquiry
To explore the relationship between traditional historical scholarship and public historical interpretation
To provide a vehicle for applying what we have learned about the impact of institutional history and audience interests on the practice of public history
