sparked a change in society at large. All over England and America groups have sprung up that call themselves Red Hat Societies. These are groups of women age 50 and older who meet on a monthly basis to have fun. The only requirement of membership in this society other than age is that members must wear red hats and gloves and something purple: a dress a blouse a pair of slacks. Although not written as social protest the poem does present an alternate reality or choice for people over the traditional way of viewing the process of aging. The response to this poem shows its ability to use language to touch peoples imagination.
