Joshua Chamberlain is a Lt Colonel in the Civil War that was a professor before the war broke out. Once the war stared Chamberlain took leave from his job as a college professor to join the Union Army. Chamberlains led troops in the Battle of Gettysburg and was completely pro Union and pro war. In a speech made by Chamberlain he disagreed with the ideology behind the Souths fight for freedom stating that there can be no freedom if there is slavery (Shaara 1998). Chamberlain was present when Lee was forced to surrender to Grant at Appomattox and acted as a leader for the surrender of the South.
